Along with his contributions to stopping apartheid, Ashe wanted to leave a structure signifying his compassion for black South Africans. The Arthur Ashe Tennis Center and Library was built in Soweto, South Africa, 1974. He wanted to provide both athletic and academic enrichment to black Africans, giving them a fair chance in life. The center has 16 courts.
